Giannis Paschos Bio

Giannis Paschos was born in 1954 in Giannena, He is a late bloomer in the world of letters as his first career was in academia; he is an Ichthyology Professor, with tens of articles published in peer reviewed journals, who has participated in many international conferences and has been a consultant to major projects both for the Public and the Private sector. In 2016 he was awarded a special prize for his scientific contribution to the field. 

Giannis has been struggling with dyslexia since childhood and beautifully describes how he scraped thought school in his recent memoir, Chronicles of a Dyslexic, which received one of the most established literary awards in Greece from Anagnostis magazine in June 2023 and subsequently a National Book Award for a Book that promotes a sensitive issue in March 2024.

  His literary work contains poems, collections of short stories, novels and essays, some of which remained unpublished for years. In March 2005, Lila Teman, his first collection of poems was published by Odos Panos Publishing. The works which followed were the collection of poems Life without Time Schedule (eds. Melani, 2007), the short story Lord have Mercy (eds. Agon, 2008), the collection of short stories One Night for One Year (eds. Melani, 2009), the essay Pisces as a Symbol and Artifact: Attempts of Interpretation (collective work, eds. Indiktos, 2010), the collection of short stories  Do Not Leave (eds. Indiktos, 2013), the collection of poems Large Canals (eds. Melani, 2015), the collection of short stories The Magical Tales of Don Domingo (Perispomeni Publications, 2017), the collection of short stories Beware of the Infants ( Perispomeni Publications, 2020), and the memoir Chronicles of a Dyslexic (Perispomeni Publications, 2022),Christ Pleading with His Body to Climb Down from the Cross (Perispomeni Publications, 2024),Birds of paradise (Perispomeni Publications, 2024). In 2019 he curated and participated in the collective project Conversations with the most silent creature in the world – 72 experiential stories written by ichthyologists (published by Athens Voice Books.

His collection of short stories One Night for One Year (eds. Melani, 2015), was shortlisted for best short stories collection award of  Diavazo magazine. It is about to be published in French by Editions Desmos.

The collection of short stories The Magical Tales of Don Domingo (eds. Perispomeni, 2020) is currently being reprinted and its opening shortlisted for publication in English by Asymptote Magazine.

His memoir Chronicles of a Dyslexic which only came out in August 2022 is already being reprinted for the fifth time. Award of  Anagnostis magazine 2023 and National award 2023. In February 2024 it premiered as a sold out theatre monologue in Peiraos 104

Giannis has his own monthly column at the literary magazine Hartis, where he contributes short stories https://www.hartismag.gr/giannhs-pasxos, a selection of which, around the common theme of imaginary water creatures, is about to be published this winter also by Perispomeni (working titles Oures, ie Tails).

 John is so prolific, he also occasionally collaborates with the literary magazines Anagnostis https://www.oanagnostis.gr/ and Frear  https://frear.gr/  .
